Fad or Bad?: January 2008

Is Neon really back?!

Neon nail polish is one thing- but a bright neon colored t-shirt? I seriously thought we could finally move on from the 80's!

I will admit, a bright neon accessory is a fun and welcome addition to spice up a plain outfit. Just be careful to not mix too many patterns and colors- super busy is still bad as a general rule. But hey! Have fun, be brave, venture into neon! Just remember- neon, like alcohol, should be used in moderation.

Her neon shoes made this just relevant enough to add! Enjoy- this is my favorite clip.

You decide- Hat or not?

Okay- big hats of all kinds have been around forever. But seriously, who really wears this stuff? But don't give up hope! There are really cute hats out there that will compliment any outfit. The right hat can be the perfect accessory to complete any ensemble. Hats can add spunk, attitude, finesse and really punch up a boring outfit so just beware- don't get the hat that obviously doesn't fit. For example:

This was obviously not the right look for me. Although it was fun to try it on, take this picture, and then scurry out of the store before pissing off the owner (we were in Montreal at the time) it just proves my point. The wrong hat, wrong size, wrong amount of "fuzziness" as noted above- DISASTROUS!
I don't care how hot you normally are. A bad hat can really make you look dumb. So just don't do it! For once... don't follow my bad fashion example!

The Unmentionables

The unmentionables. What does that word mean to you? To me it means bras, panties or boxer shorts. My mom used that phrase when I was younger because she always thought it was inappropriate to talk about underwear so she would say unmentionables. Now days, trends have changed dramatically for the under clothes. Girls are wearing lacy thongs that match with their lacy bras. Guys are wearing unique boxers with the face of Cartman from South Park on them. You can't always have cute underwear on of course. When it's laundry day everyone is wearing their "granny panties". Those of course are the panties that go over your belly button and rest on your hips. Those were the style back in the day. Now you are lucky to have your panties cover anything because they are getting skimpier and skimpier every day. Below are some examples of the different "styles of underwear for woman. Here are a pair of panties that you would wear basically for any occasion.

These are the "granny panties" that you wear on laundry day.

Here is a skimpy thong to wear out on a date to show off to someone special at the end of the night!

Now that you know some of the few different types of panties, and know what occasions to wear them for, you can go about your day and feel better now that you are dressed for an occasion! Ladies have fun with this, don't feel embarrassed any more by your ugly underwear. Go shopping and buy something fun, and when laundry day comes you will have those classic "granny panties" to help you through!

Earrings have come a long way in style over the years. They have gone from small pearls and diamonds to chunky hoops with electrifying colors. A lot of women now wear the vibrant colored earrings that are pretty hefty in size. That’s not to say for everyone though; many still enjoy the smaller more simplex side of things. They are either long and dangling or big hoop earrings with sequins or some funky color. Most earrings come in multiple colors to match every shirt in your wardrobe. That way you match in every aspect all the way up to your ears. There are also the very elegant, yet still very noticeable “prom or special occasion” earings. Those are the earrings that are filled with diamonds and shine so much that you are seen all over the dance floor or restaurant. They are very classy and dress up material for any dance and or date. Earrings keep getting more different within style every day. They keep going from simple to more risqué. Leaving people wondering if those should even be worn any were because of the size, color and style of them. Anyway you see it earrings are becoming more apart of every women’s outfit when they get up in the morning.

Socks or no socks?

For some reason I have a crazy obsession over cute socks. I love going to Wal-Mart or Deb in the mall and finding the cutest socks to buy. I like colorful ones, with stripes, stars, hearts etc. I don't like just plain black or white ones. To me those are boring. I think dressing your feet up in cute little socks can help you have a happier day. It starts with the socks, then the shoes, then the pants and the shirt. Just work your way up from your feet up to the top. Having fun with your wardrobe is guaranteed to boost your attitude. I even like to match my socks with my outfit. If I'm wearing a green shirt I will look for socks with a little green on them.

I know some people might think this is strange because you really don't see peoples socks because they are wearing shoes. What I think about though, is when you go to someone's house and take your shoes off. Thats going to be one of the first things they notice, and if it's awkward silence, a conversation starter.

So have fun with your socks. Pick out ones that say a lot about you, ones that express your personality. Through out the beat up old white socks with the holes in them and get some brand new ones. There are always plenty of good sales on socks, they are always cheap. A small prize to be creative and have fun with your sock wardrobe. So go out today, buy some socks and let it brighten your day. You will be surprised by how fun it really is!

Below are a pair of cute socks that I found online, just an example!

Purse Obsession

(Written by: Christy Penney)

Purses have been making a big fashion statement for many women. A lot of places that you go you will almost always find a women holding a purse of some sort whether it be small or rather over sized. The Tote bag purse has made quite the impact on women these days.
Those are the purses that are big enough to fit a whole wardrobe in them practically. They have become very popular especially among celebrities that you see in magazines. They hold a variety of everything in the purse; whatever you want in there it will fit. The Bigger the purse is the better. It just means more room for all of her needs. However that statement does not always stand true for all women.

Some prefer the more small and sophisticated purses. The ones that you just carry around money and little things in it that you need on a daily basis. That way it’s a little easier to carry around rather than something so big that it looks like you’re packing away for a trip.

Then you have the little wristlets that are mostly used for special occasions such as, weddings, proms, dinners, etc. They are more of a hand decoration for women, just something to dress up an outfit on a special day. Wristlets are little bags that slip around your wrist and dangle by your palm. They are great for makeup if you’re going out on a date and need to touch up at anytime during the night or for little cans of mints if needed.

Purses also come in many different brands some popular brands among women are Coach, Prada, Chanel, and Dooney & Bourke. That is just to name a few there are many more out there that women thrive to get. They are a little on the pricey side but when you find a bargain women are not far from taking it off the shelf. Purses are not for all women some prefer just to carry money around in pockets and some just use wallets. In any case a lot of women have been using purses of many types for their use of transportation of needs.

Nails

What your nails look like is very important to most people. Whether you clean the dirt out of them, file them, trim them, paint them or have acrylics put on, it's all about your nail image. What your nails look like defines you. It’s not only about the style and your personality, but it’s about your self-esteem as well. For example a women whose nails are short or brittle get them done to beautify their nails. If you let your nails look dirty than that shows you don't care about your personal appearance much. If you get your nails "done," you can express yourself on them. You can use the nail as a "canvas" and make fancy designs, crazy colors, or make them look elegant. What your nails look like depends on who you are and what your self image is. Personally, I think a well kept hand makes a woman more beautiful, and put together.

"Shady"

Feeling troubled over what color to wear? What color makes you look good? Well, fashion is all about yourself. What you choose to wear every morning tells a lot about you and how you felt that day. Even your little handbag carries a little story. Mixing and matching is a personal choice, you create your very own style. Some very popular colors in fashion are white, which is a light and neutral color. It goes well with any color. Black is always a popular color, it's always stylish and never goes out of trend. Then there is red, an expressive color used a lot in fashion, yellow which is a color commonly used in casual fashion, and blue which is a popular color that most people like. Last but not least pink, which is a feminine color for girls. I suggest you stick to one color, you can go all white, all blue or whatever you like. Remeber hot goes with cool to, like match yellow with green or blue not with red. You also want to use neutral colors to draw looks together. For example; white, gray, beige and black, those are good neutral colors. Or you can simply play around and match colors that resemble eachother like pink and maroon. Whatever works best for you. Watch out for skin colors also, darker colors go with darker tones, lighter colors go with lighter tones. It's important to look your best and to do it right, but do it creating your own style and what best fits you.

Leggings With Skirts

Whether your going to an 80's dance or you just want to look a bit chic, leggings under skirts are in-style! This type of fashion has been around for many years and it's finally coming back. There are all sorts of leggings to choose from. Maybe you're a little modest and will go for the solid color of the blacks, browns, or whites, however, leggings come in all colors and designs. You can mix and match with stripes or polka-dots. Depending on what event you plan to attend will make your choice to go crazy or to be subtle with your style. Leggings look good under any type of skirt, such as jean skirts, plaid skirts, mini skirts, etc. Just make sure your leggings match with your skirt. You obviously don't want to put striped leggings with a polka dot skirt! Jean skirts are usually the most common because jeans match with absolutely everything. Also, try to add a cute little heel with your leggings and your skirt for a nice touch to a great outfit!

What Not To Wear

One of my favorite shows is What Not To Wear on TLC. The hosts are fashion gurus, Stacy and Clinton. They take people who are nominated by friends, family members, or co-workers and change their entire fashion sense. The concept seems pretty easy, but it certainly is not. Some people just do not want to change or do not feel comfortable changing their entire wardrobe. During a course of a few days, Stacy and Clinton will teach the candidate what clothes are good for their body type and why. The candidate is then sent out to shop on his or her own to see if he or she can retain the information given to them by Stacy and Clinton. The next day, Stacy and Clinton help the candidate spend the rest of the five-thousand dollars given to them on clothes that will actually look good on their body type. Next, the lucky candidate will get their hair and make-up done by professional stylists and the make-over will occur. Finally, the candidate gets to show off his or her new look to friends, family, and co-workers. I love the concept of this show because it changes people's lives and gives them more confidence. I highly recommend watching it because we all can learn a little bit of fashion advice from Stacy and Clinton. What Not To Wear airs Friday nights at 9/8c on TLC. Here's a little preview of what Stacy and Clinton can teach you.

A Local Look

Now, I'm not sure if the prices of hair brushes went up extremelty high or if the price of make-up is almost free, but to me this is a deffinate fashion don't! The Dexter Tigers aren't the only thing that is out of this world! In order to fix this fashion don't this honey would have to comb the 7 birds nests out of her hair, wash it, use some detangler and than flat iron her hair, or even spiral curl. But she should have NEVER teased it so much that there could be a jet hiding under it. If you want healthy hair use conditioner, detangler, some spritz and WASH ladies!

Bangor Mall Sales!!

The Holidays are behind us and we've got plenty of gift cards and returns we want to make! So indulge in the life of shopping as soon as you can. Although it's a couple weeks after Christmas there are still PLENTY of sales going on. I went to the Bangor Mall on Saturday and if you put aside the pain of long lines, you can find some major bargains. Aeropostale is having their annual Bulldog sale so you can save up to 70% off their merchandise. I found myself a solid colored polo shirt for under $20. And if you're feeling generous you can donate any pair of gently worn jeans and recieve 20% off a new pair! WOWZA! What's hot for accessories? -- Hoop earings, and beaded necklaces which I found at Pac Sun for only $4.99! I've got a budget but I figured with these prices I couldn't go wrong! So go crazy, the sales won't last much longer! ENJOY!

The Flip- Flop

Flip-flops have been popular among woman, men, and children for quite some time now. You can get flip- flops in almost any color and style. I personally like to wear them with skirts, shorts and a bathing suit but they really go with anything. They are most common in the summer obviously because you have to wear them between two toes and that would be kind of hard to do with socks on in the winter.

The use of the word flip-flop for thong sandals is a modern term dating from the 1960's that describes what is probably the oldest form of footwear still being worn. Flip-flops have been around for at least six thousand years, styles of course changing throughout the years.

Now days kids wear them to the beach or the pool because you can just slip them on and slip them off. You can get really nice expensive ones, or cheap ones at Wal-Mart that you could wear in the water.

The growth in flip-flops has been part of a general change in fashion overall during the past twenty years, as it has become more casual overall for everyday events. Almost anyone you ask will say they have a pair.

So go to the store and pick up a pair, you will be guaranteed to enjoy them because they are so comfy it's like you are wearing slippers, or even no shoes at all!

Finding the Right Shade...

Do you ever have problems figuring out what color eye shadow you should wear? Well a lot of girls do. They are never sure if they should match or contrast their make-up color with their clothes or eyes. The answer to that question is easy. The reason for wearing eye shadow is to make your eyes stand out right? Then why bury them with boring colors that simply match. If your eyes are brown, you don’t want to wear brown eye shadow because they will get lost. It’s the same if you are wearing a blue shirt, you don’t want to wear blue shadow. If you wear a light colored eye shadow, dress it up with a black eye liner to make it stand out even more. For an example, two colors that tend to go well together are green and pink. If you are wearing a green shirt, try pink eye shadow or if you’re wearing a pink shirt try green eye shadow. Also if you have brown eyes, try blue eye shadow, it will help it stand out much more. The eyes are the windows to our soul and we want everyone to be able to see through them. If it means wearing make-up that can accentuate that, more power to it. Here are a few colors to try that are contrasting and will compliment different eye colors:

Brown: Try purple, gold, blue, burnt oranges and gray. Use eyeliner and mascara to make your eyes stand out even more. Stay away from dark browns or blacks because it will blend in too much instead of stand out.

Blue: Don’t ever try to use a different shade of blue if you have blue eyes, your eyes will look dull. Try lilac, camel, lavender, and taupe. These colors will make your eyes look bluer than they already are. If you use black, don’t use too much of it or you will look too Goth. The trick to make –up is making it look like you aren’t wearing make-up.

Hazel: Try using deep mauves, pinks, lavender, plums and eggplant. Your eyes will look more alive after using these colors.

Green: Use brownish-pinks, mauve, salmon and purple. Your eyes will look sexier and vibrant.

After your choose a color that compliments your eyes, remember to think about what you are wearing and try to contrast those colors as well. If you have blue eyes and are wearing lavender eye shadow but are wearing a lavender shirt, you might want to try something different. The ultimate goal when wearing eye shadow is to make your eyes stand out, and have an overall balance to your appearance.

If you follow these simple steps you will be ready for a night on the town, or maybe a nice dinner with a friend or two at a restaurant. Whatever the occasion, these tips will be helpful to make you look your best. So go out there and buy some new shades. You will be happy with your results!

Let the Mullet Die!

If we all ban together- we can let the mullet die gracefully. This is one style that should have been extinct long, long ago!

If your hair grows in too thin on top- do not take that as an invitation to simply cut it short on top and let it grow long and scraggly in the back. Somehow this “trend” (and I use this word loosely) started and it HAS TO STOP.

Thanks to www.mulletsgalore.com we now have names for all the different mullet classifications.

For example:

There is the classic mullet- 01. classic mullet: this specimen is a clear demonstration of a classic mullet. Note how this mullet proudly displays his exotic plumage while in a menacing stance. Classic indeed. The mesh tank-top, digital watch, silver chain, and molester mustache all add points to this fine specimen's overall look and mulletude. Thank you to www.mulletsgalore.com for this description
The camaro mullet-

2. CamaroMullet: The CamaroMullet used to have full reign over the mullet brethren, but that was back in the 70's and 80's. This species has fallen from grace since, but can still be seen enjoying NASCAR events and shopping at Kragen, or up in the attic cooking up crank. Distinguishing features include: a molester mustache (peach fuzzy), tight-fitting acid wash jeans, and an ever-present key ring hanging from the belt loop.

Feel the mulletude emanating through your computer screen from this rare pic.

It is not recommended you confront the CamaroMullet, for they are very aggressive and cannot be hurt (this might be due to the frequent use of methamphetamines, angel dust, etc.). Thank you to www.mulletsgalore.com for this description

The business mullet- 4. businessmullet a.k.a. safety cut: These mullets want it all: business in the front, party in the back.

When at work, their mulletude offends and annoys their co-workers, but luckily (and not coincidentally), these mullets are rarely in any position of real power (though they tend to think they are).

Interesting creatures, their hair is short enough not to offend the boss, but long enough to keep their rebellious comrades from becoming suspicious. Thank you to: www.mulletsgalore.com for this information

And my personal favorite!

The femme mullet- or femullet (fem-mullet): there are many varieties of the femullet--and contrary to popular belief, not all femullets are dykemullets, but all dykemullets are definitely femullets. Here we see a powerdykemullet. Thank you to: www.mulletsgalore.com for this information

This is never a good idea. There are so many ways to style one’s hair without leaning towards the mullet, that I’m still baffled every time I see one of these offenders on the street.

Please! No more mullets!

Revenge of the Butt Cleavage

Urbandictionary.com describes butt cleavage as:
1. butt cleavage
The space between the cheeks of your butt, when the cheeks are squeezed together. Particularily sexy when a female is wearing ultra low rise jeans, and exposes just a little of it!
1. to make the butt cheeks purse together

2. to situate oneself so that surplus butt pops over the top of one's pants
~ Thanks to www.urbandictionary.com for the above commentary ~

We've all seen them. Those that don't have it up top so they supplement with butt cleavage. THIS IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA! I was recently watching an episode of "Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency" where one of her new clients was selling pants for men that were cut out in the back to show butt cleavage. Ugh! Seriously? This is the new concept for "high fashion". I was morbidly disturbed by this turn of events. Really good looking men, walking around exposing their butt cracks! This is beyond gross. So please, I'm begging the American public- put the butt cleavage epidemic to rest. It was NEVER a good idea.

Pain for the Beauty of Fashion

(Written by: Christy Penney)

Stilettos are making quite the impact for many young girls out there. Especially the ones that some would call the “witch” shoes. Those are the heels with the pointed toes that you see half the girls wearing these days. Many would wonder how one could walk so quick and easy in them without breaking their necks. Well the answer to that would be: A lot of practice and a lot of pain to bear for a few weeks of breaking the old shoe in. In any case the stiletto pointed toe shoes are very popular among everyone. They look good with just about anything especially skirts and capris. The shoes range in various colors, no matter what the color is you’re more than likely going to find one to match every shirt you own. Whether it’s Shiny black or leopard print, they’ve got it covered for you. If you’re ready to join the fashion statement of pointed toes be prepared to handle pain for the beauty of the fashion.

Spandex, Pants or No.

(Written by: Christy Penney)

Spandex leggings and t-shirts have become trendy in the fashion atomosphere making quite the statement. Spandex started out being a way for someone to go out for a nice jog in. However it has made quite the impact in the fashion world these days everywhere. Not only have people gone from jogging in them but they have started wearing them under mini skirts and shorts. Spandex has risen up in the fashion alert area with people putting on regular t-shirts with spandex being the pants part of the outfit. Some say it’s a new way of wearing the spandex while others think of it as not so very tasteful in fashion. Which ever way you chose to go, spandex is coming back in many ways and it’s coming back big. They come in all colors and styles varying from stripes, polka dots and solids to knee and ankle length. They can be worn with any t-shirt or short mini dress with the spandex substituting as the pants. Some have gone as far as to wear a polo and dress sweater with the whole ensemble. Spandex is only sure enough to get higher up on the fashion statement scale. As people figure out more things to put together and make into a whole new outfit.

Black and White??

I've noticed throughout my life that many Americans wear white socks with black shoes. Do they think it looks good? It certainly does not. First of all, it doesn't match and you can clearly see the mismatched colors if the person is wearing shoes. You can't see it as well, if the person has black or brown sneakers on. Still, I have traveled to Europe and Canada is practically in my backyard. I have seen real fashion and I have yet to see a European wear white socks with black shoes. Most of the time, women will not wear socks with shoes, but in the wintertime, the feet get a bit chilly and you might have to wear an extra layer. If so, do not make this horrible mistake. It makes you look bad, as well as those cute shoes that you might be wearing!

How to wear UGGS

Some people love them and some people hate them. As for me, I extremely wanted a pair of Ugg Boots for Christmas. My mom searched the internet, as well as surrounding stores and could not find my size anywhere. They were always sold out. I told her it was okay to get me boots similar to Uggs and that's exactly what she did. She bought me Koolaburras for Christmas and I am in love with them! I like to wear them with the fur showing over my jeans, however, some people just don't know how to wear them the right way. I have seen people around the Husson College Campus wearing sweatpants with the Ugg Boots. This disgusts me. These girls have a fashionable boot, worth-wearing, yet they do not look good wearing them with ugly unfashionable sweatpants. At least wear sneakers if you're going to wear sweatpants! Please, find a good way to wear your Uggs, so you don't look like trailer trash too.
